Parcels for prisoners of war

On Friday morning [July 2nd, 1915] a number of parcels were sent from the Town Hall to Luton men of the Bedfordshire Regiment who are prisoners of war in Germany. These parcels are being sent fortnightly, the cost being met by public subscriptions, assisted by donations in kind.

Each parcel sent off on Friday contained:

3 loaves of bread

1 tin of dripping

1 tin of margarine

1 lb tin of golden syrup

¾ lb currant biscuits

½ lb plain biscuits

1 lb sugar

1 tin of milk

1 tin of cafe au lait

½ lb rolled oats

1 tin of Oxo cubes

3 bars of milk chocolate

1 jar of meat paste

6 packets of cigarettes

1 oz tobacco

Cigarette papers.

Each parcel is to the value of five shillings and is packed so as to just come within the maximum weight of 11 lbs for parcel post.

Pte A. Fensome, 7441, 1st Battalion - 13 Park Place, Luton.

ALTDAMM

Pte H. Jackson, 9590, 2nd Battalion - Biscot.

The labels attached were printed in both English and German, and bore the following notice: "If prisoner-of-war to whom this parcel is sent wishes to receive another parcel he should acknowledge the receipt of this either through his relatives in Luton or by sending a postcard to the Town Clerk, Luton."

So far as prisoners whose homes are in the Luton district but who have been serving with other regiments are concerned, we understand at any rate are being provided for regimentally. But where such prisoners belong to regiments for which no organisation of this character has been set up, we believe we are correct in saying they will receive favourable consideration by the Luton Committee.
