Police chief job to be advertised

Luton Special Constabulary 1917

  • Luton Special Constabulary 1917

As no reply has been received from the Home Office to the representations made by the Luton Corporation some five or six weeks ago concerning the suggestion of the amalgamation of the Borough Police Force with the County Constabulary, the Town Council decided on Tuesday [February 20th, 1917] to invite applications by advertisement for the post of Chief Constable at a salary of £300 per annum with residence, for which the rent is to be £10 per annum.

Alderman Oakley explained that when the late Mr David Teale first came to Luton his salary was £200, and he rose to £380 and paid £8 a year for the house. It was therefore thought £300 a year ought to be sufficient to provide them with a good man.

It was also reported that as the special constables were so satisfactorily served by a local firm with respect to their new overcoats, the Watch Committee had decided to advertise locally for the supply of clothing required for the whole of the Force.
